VPN not connecting on Android? 9 fixes that usually work
Short answer
Most VPN connection problems on Android come from a few things: the network itself, an outdated app, battery optimization, another VPN app holding the connection, or Private DNS settings. Work through the checklist below in order — the first steps fix most cases.
Start with the basics
- Check the internet without the VPN. Disconnect the VPN and open a website. If it doesn’t load, the problem is the network, not the VPN.
- Reconnect. Disconnect, wait a few seconds and connect again — the app picks a server again and replaces one that doesn’t answer. If a server doesn’t answer for a while, VPN Tube also switches to TCP by itself. “Waiting for network” means the connection is paused until the internet is back; it restores automatically.
- Update the app. Open VPN Tube in Google Play and install updates; older versions may stop connecting.
- Switch networks. Try mobile data instead of Wi‑Fi, or the other way round. Some public networks block VPN connections.
Check Android settings
- Turn off other VPN apps. Android allows one VPN at a time. In Settings → Network & internet → VPN (Samsung: Connections → More connection settings → VPN), make sure no other app is connected or set to “Always-on”.
- Allow background work. Set battery usage for VPN Tube to “Unrestricted” (Settings → Apps → VPN Tube → Battery), and check that Data Saver doesn’t restrict it.
- Check Private DNS. In Settings → Network & internet → Private DNS (Samsung: Connections → More connection settings → Private DNS), a custom provider can conflict with the VPN. Set it to “Automatic” while testing.
- Set date and time to automatic. A wrong clock breaks encrypted connections. On Android 12+, also allow “Alarms & reminders” for the free VPN Tube — the session timer needs it.

If nothing helps
- Reinstall the app. Uninstall VPN Tube, restart the phone and install it again from Google Play. (Bought PRO in Google Play? After reinstalling, tap Restore Sub.)

Disconnects on the free plan are expected
In the free VPN Tube, each connection ends after 1 hour or 1 GB, with a short countdown and a notification. That’s not a fault: connect again and the count starts over, or tap +min / +MB and watch a short ad for extra. VPN Tube PRO has no limits and stays connected.
Questions about this topic
Why does the VPN disconnect when the screen is off?
Usually battery optimization stops the app in the background. Set VPN Tube’s battery usage to “Unrestricted”.
The VPN connects but websites don’t open. What now?
Reconnect so the app picks a server again, then check Private DNS and the date and time settings. If you’re on public Wi‑Fi, open its login page with the VPN off first.
